ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Alabama Shakes
After an eight-year absence, Alabama Shakes are poised to make their return announcing a 2025 Tour across the US The Athens, AL-raised band, comprised of vocalist/guitarist Brittany Howard, guitarist Heath Fogg, and bassist Zac Cockrell exploded onto the scene in 2012 with their debut album Boys & Girls, (ATO Records), which entered Billboard’s Independent Albums chart at No. 1. Boys & Girls earned the band multiple Grammy nominations and was hailed as one of the year’s best albums by numerous publications, including Rolling Stone, which also named lead single “Hold On” the #1 Best Song of 2012. Soon after its release, the bandmates found themselves thrust into the global spotlight, achieving such milestones as performing at the White House and on “Saturday Night Live.”
The band’s legacy continued to grow with the groundbreaking Sound & Color (ATO Records). Released 10 years ago, the album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, won Grammy Awards for Best Alternative Music Album and Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical. The first single, “Don’t Wanna Fight,” took honors in the Best Rock Performance and Best Rock Song categories. Sound & Color marked a profound evolution from Alabama Shakes’ debut album, as The New York Times Magazine observed, heralding the band’s “soul-stirring, shape-shifting new sound.” Both Sound & Color and Boys & Girls were certified Platinum by the RIAA.
The Shakes’ Cockrell, Fogg, & Howard have also reunited in the studio promising new music to fans who have been eagerly awaiting their return.
Caleb Elliott
Like the sprawling branches of a tenured Magnolia, Caleb Elliott’s sophomore album Weed, Wine & Time is beauty and grit personified. There are songs that began over a decade ago in Lafayette, LA, elegantly woven together with younger tunes crafted in Florence, AL (the place Elliott calls his “musical home”). The result is genre defiant grandeur. There are veins of JJ Cale country, the soul-jazz of Michael Kiwanuka, and the lyric fragility of Sufjan Stevens crisscrossing throughout WW&T. With these songs, Elliott’s mastery of craft and nuance are on full display. Track to track, Elliott confidently paints with the full gamut of emotion. From the Spring lightness of the title track to the wrecking-ball weight of FUBC (written in honor of a lost loved one), Elliott grafts equal amounts of hope and hurt into the root system of WW&T. Elliott’s uncanny ability to marry ear-worm hooks with complex & honest feeling has made WW&T his most impressive album yet.
Recorded and mixed at the Florence, AL studio Sun Drop Sound, WW&T is the production lovechild of Elliott & his long time friend/engineer/collaborator Ben Tanner. Also lending talent to the liner notes are a cavalcade of Elliott’s music community that includes John Paul White, Zac Cockrell, AJ Haynes, and Maggie Rose (among others). When combined, the resulting album has a depth chart of multiple Grammy and Americana award winning contributors.
Weed, Wine & Time is an album replete with soothing catharsis and challenging introspection. It does what all great albums do: It invites a listener to fall in love with both the music and the message. Between it’s joy, heartache, expertise and timeless feel, Weed, Wine & Time is a veritable gumbo of great music. It is a sonic dish carefully prepared with affection and served with the intent to move and to please. WW&T begs you to taste and see. Which is fitting when you consider that Louisiana-born Elliott believes “Nothing says I love you more than making someone a gumbo.” He has done just that, and it is delicious.
Alanna Royale
Sometimes you have to fall apart in order to the find the most real version of yourself.
On the surface R&B and soul singer Alanna Royale appeared to be brimming with confidence yet the artist behind the internal earthquake Trouble Is insists that until this latest LP she felt fragmented. Only after the most unnerving time of her life did Royale finally feel at ease bringing her full artistic self to the table.
With Trouble Is, Alanna is marrying her passion for classic 70’s Soul and 90’s R&B to serve up an unrelenting emotional rollercoaster. Under the guise of slow and low summer jams and luxurious string arrangements Royale is slowly unraveling her own experiences with EMDR therapy, addiction, and self-loathing.
However, the biggest triumph for Royale is that Trouble Is avoids the dreaded genre trap. As someone who has always followed artists that bravely morph from one record to the next, she also aspires for that same level of investment from her audience. She’ll keep boldly turning the wheel and have faith that they will follow along.
The only thing more powerful than a deep dive into this album is seeing it play out live on stage. Laugh out loud funny and fearlessly outspoken, one doesn’t have to wonder if Alanna Royale is in the room and her gospel with surely stir you and follow you all the way home. Whether it’s her arresting vocals, air tight rhythm section, or shiny brass section; Alanna Royale is a can’t miss artist with her feet planted firmly in the sounds of the past and her eyes on the future.
