Marilyn Minter’s work explores the role of the female body in American popular culture and fashion. Inspired by commercial advertisements, Smash features a dancer’s feet tightly stuffed into a bedazzled pair of stilettos. At once seductive and aggressive, the enlarged scale of the feet invite our gaze as we watch them dance, splash, and stomp in puddles of silver paint.
In the end, the dancer seeks to disrupt any illusion of delicate femininity as she shatters the glass pane separating the viewer’s gaze from her body.
Free. Projected nightly from sunset to midnight on the Tower.
