An Interactive multimedia new ritual that shape-shifts from song to music to movement to story. Gwekaanimad >><< Wind Changes Direction creates a portal to the past to gain insight to the future. Performer and Interdisciplinary artist Ty Defoe explores language and design to deepen relations with nature’s deepest mysteries. Join us for an intimate journey into creative process and practice, where sacred knowledge and technology interweave. Following the performance will be a talkback with the artists. ABOUT TY DEFOE [He/We]
Ty Defoe (Giizhig), hailing from the Oneida and Ojibwe Nations of the Great Lakes, is a writer, interdisciplinary artist, shape-shifter, and Grammy Award winner. Defoe aspires to an interweaving approach to artistic projects with social justice, indigeneity, indiqueering, and environmentalism. Defoe’s global cultural arts highlights include the Millennium celebration in Cairo, Egypt; Ankara, Turkey’s International Music Festival; and Festival of World Cultures in Dubai. Defoe was a Robert Rauschenberg Artist in Residence and won a Jonathan Larson Award. Works created and authored include River of Stone, Red Pine, The Way They Lived, Ajijaak on Turtle Island, Hear Me Say My Name, among others.
Defoe is co-founder of Indigenous Direction (w/ Larissa FastHorse) and member of All My Relations Collective, showing GIZHIBAA GIIZHIG | Revolving Sky part of Under The Radar at the Public Theater, NYC. Degrees from California Institute of the Arts, Goddard College, and NYU Tisch School of the Arts. Movement Direction: Mother Road, Dir. Bill Rauch (OSF), Manahatta, Dir. Laurie Woolery (OSF + Yale Rep), and Choreographer for Tracy Lett’s The Minutes (Broadway). Appeared on the Netflix show; Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, and Broadway debut in Young Jean Lee’s Straight White Men, Dir. Anna Shapiro. Lives in NYC and loves the color clear. Defoe is an Albuquerque facilitator in the upcoming 2021 Live in America Festival at the Momentary.
